A multi-stage, multi-system bacterial infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, a spiral-shaped bacterium that is most commonly transmitted by a tick bite and found mainly in certain areas of the United States. If untreated, this may lead to arthritic symptoms over time. Rash, heart disease, and nervous system involvement may also occur.
